(World War Two) 1941 “Remember Pearl Harbor” Poster. Chicago: George Matthews, 1941. Original broadside poster dated December 9, 1941, printed on lightweight board, 14 x 22”. Likely one of the first World War II posters printed in the United States, just two days after the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. This broadside is titled “Our Country and Our Creed” and its author is identified as George W. Matthews. It states, in part: “a cowardly and dastardly assault has been made upon our shores by a cunning, cruel and treacherous enemy. We are now at war with these enemies. We shall stand united and bring forth all our strength and with mighty blows we will crush our enemies wherever they may be found. The Japanese war lords will be smashed to earth and their “Son of Heaven” humiliated and disgraced forever. Hitler and his gangsters will be crushed and conquered with Nazism forever banished from a peaceful and liberty loving world …… Be of good cheer, you are living in the United States of America. …. You eat better here! You live better, can do better, can have more friends and can be happier here than in any other place on earth. Don’t criticize our government, our army or our allies, if you don’t like it here, go back to your own country …… Remember Pearl Harbor.” The poster is evenly toned throughout, and wavy with some bends at top.
