Half-length portrait of Carlyle performing the Cups and Balls in white tie and tails, producing a baby chick. 8 x 10”. Inscribed and signed, “To Joe Berg, A Helluva guy…Francis Carlyle/”Sleightly Known.” 10/11/44.” Minor wear in margins. My all accounts a talented and funny man, Carlyle battled depression and alcoholism throughout his life. Along with Vernon, Scarne, Jarrow, and a select few others, he was one of the original “Stars of Magic,” and his Homing Card effect is considered a modern classic of card magic.
