[Bottle Conjurer] Gillray, James. The Theatrical Bubble. [London: Hannah Humphrey, ca. 1810]. Hand-colored aquatint depicts Sheridan as Punchinello blowing soap bubbles. The infamous Bottle Conjuror is among the detritus on a nearby table. 8vo. A later impression, lacking publisher’s name. Marginal wear, folds, small old repair to verso. Gillray incorporated the fabled Bottle Conjuror incident into this carton some fifty years after the event took place, proving that the magician’s hoax remained a cultural touchstone for decades. See Christopher, Panorama of Magic (1962), pp. 25.
