[MUGSHOTS—SAN FRANCISCO]. A group of 46 mugshots of San Francisco criminals. 1880s. Mounted on eight disbound ledger leaves, all with six subjects per leaf (except for two cases, whose photographs were ordered removed by Chief of Police (Patrick) Crowley due to acquittal in one case, and for the party “leading an industrious and honest life” in the other). Subjects’ names, and several aliases and deaths, neatly notated in ink in margins. Images 2 15/16 x 2 ½”. Sheets 9 x 4 ½”.Two female subjects are represented in this collection; all others are white men of various ages, including several juveniles. Although their crimes are not recorded in the ledger, this lot is accompanied by a thick file of copies of 1880s news clippings from the San Francisco Chronicle containing reporting on the crimes committed by the subjects in this group. The articles mainly describe robberies and other petty crimes attributed to the criminals in the ledger, but also more serious criminals such as Charles Abbott, whose fatal stabbing of a saloonkeeper was widely covered; and Edward Dunton, a child molester whose crimes of “indecent assault and seduction” of girls are luridly recounted.
