Stephen F. Austin Life Like Wax Head. England: Gems of London, ca. 1960s. Well executed wax head of Stephen Austin, remembered in Texas history for his many efforts on behalf of the state before, during, and immediately after its Declaration of Independence from Mexico. Life size. With metal ring at base. Dusty and with tangled hair, otherwise good. Austin’s (1793-1836) contributions to Texas included long and perilous travels to Mexico on behalf of Texas; his unwillingness to counsel his people to take up arms against the Mexican government as long as any hope for peace remained; and his many travels in the United States to obtain needed support for his struggling Texan countrymen.
