Mt. Vesuvius Pompeii Eruption Lava Plaque. Italy, ca. 1870s. Carvers created intricate designs from hardened lava, represented by this plaque, which shows the volcano in full eruption over the Neapolitan bay. 4 ½ x 2”. In custom fitted period box. Very good. During the Victorian era viewing the ruins of Pompeii were a desirable stop for the wealthy travelers on a “Grand Tour” of Europe. Cameos and plaques carved from the lava - plentiful after that volcano’s eruption - were popular souvenirs.
