Tampa (Ray Sugden). Thurston the Magician Presents Tampa England’s Court Magician. Cleveland: The Otis Litho. Co., ca. 1923. Lithographed window card bearing a portrait of Tampa with imps perched on his shoulders, whispering in his ears. 22 x 14". Significant chipping and tears with losses throughout, inpainting to closed tears affecting image; Text in wax pastel to upper margin “Clifford/Thursday, Friday, Saturday.” C-. Linen backed. Scarce. Howard Thurston hired two magicians to represent him and take out units of his show in the 1920s. The first was Dante – Harry August Jansen – who had worked behind the scenes for Thurston for years. The second was Ray Sugden, who, under the name of Tampa, toured only briefly under Thurston’s sponsorship. As a result, theatrical advertising and lithographs for Tampa are scarce.
