Mitchell, S. Augustus. Mitchell’s New General Atlas. Philadelphia: S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr., 1870. Publisher’s half calf over pebbled cloth, ruled in gilt and decoratively stamped in blind with gilt titling to front board. Small folio. [4], 95, [1], 25, [6]. Complete with sixty-three quarto hand colored maps forming a series of one hundred maps and plans together with valuable statistical tables; including a world map, time table, and at least thirty-five pertaining to the United States, including several individual states, regions, and city plans. Spine rubbed and chipped, front board slightly loose, few maps foxed; generally at margins. This is Mitchell's first edition to show the Territory of Arizona with the borders known today, but with only four counties plus the nebulous political region of Pahute in the northwest corner; Wyoming is depicted in hand coloring but simply labeled “Mountains”; Modern day Oklahoma is labeled “Indian Territory”; South Dakota is shown as a territory and spelled with the Native American spelling, “Dakotah”; with the uncommon double page map of California.
Mitchell’s New General Atlas.
