Whipple, Seth Arca (1855—1901). Lumber boat on the Detroit River, 1893. Oil on canvas laid on board. Signed and dated ‘1893’. Sight 13 ¾ x 10 ½”. Frame 17 ½ x 14 ½”. Some surface grime, otherwise very good condition. Seth Arca Whipple, of Detroit, Michigan, was a noted marine painter of Great Lakes sailing ships and steamers in the era of transition from wind to steam power. His paintings have become iconic of that time and place, and as early as the 1880s The Calvert Lithographic Company of Detroit made large size lithographic copies of some of his paintings, many of which adorned steamship waiting rooms and offices. They are collectible in their own right. This original painting shows in remarkable detail a heavily loaded cargo vessel passing through the Detroit river, with Sandwich (now Windsor), Ontario on one side, and the city of Detroit on the other, with a steamer in the distance.
