Dickens, Charles. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club. London: Chapman and Hall, n.d. [ca. 1838]. First edition, later issue (copy B). Later green cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Illustrated with engraved and additional title-page + 41 engraved plates by R. Seymour and H.K. Browne (“Phiz”), without the two plates by Buss which were suppressed and later replaced by those by Phiz. Includes the half-title; the footnote on Page 9; "Directions to the Binder" leaf without the six-line errata on verso; pages 25-26 are a single insert leaf; that and the following leaf both bearing the signature mark `E'; the frontispiece has four stripes on the chair (later there were five); the plaque on the second engraved title-page reads "Weller" instead of "Veller." Moderate foxing to frontise and title-page, marginal browning throughout, previous ownership signature and inscription to ffep; otherwise a clean copy. Very good. Eckel pp. 51-58; Gimbel A-15; Hatton & Cleaver pp. 3-88; Smith pp. 19-27.
