Original ribbed cloth decoratively embossed and ruled in blind, spine stamped in gilt. Frontispiece with tissue guard. Illustrated with gardening designs and architectural plans + woodcut initials. Tall 8vo. 451pp. Expertly repaired spine ends; panel darkened, old adhesive ghosting to pastedowns, scattered foxing. Scarce. This was the first published book on landscape gardening in the U.S. and remains quite scarce in the first edition. Downing is widely considered the be the greatest single figure in American horticulture, later influencing the work of Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux.
