Frontispieces in each volume. Numerous illustrations and maps including a foldout map in vol. I of Indian Localities in 1833. Tall 8vos. Outer joints and spine panel cracked with partial separation to panel titling in vol. I; inner front joint reinforced in both vols., edges rubbed, few small tape repairs along verso of fold, pale foxing to plates; else clean. [Together with:] Annual Report of the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution…to July 1885 (Government Printing Office, 1886; containing a history of the George Catlin Indian Gallery at the Smithsonian, including a full annotated catalogue of Catlin’s Indian portraits). Catlin was the first artist to record the appearance and customs of Native Americans, assembling a large collection of the paintings and artifacts into his travelling Indian Gallery.
