Leon, Leon M. A Figural Leg from The Great Leon’s Elephant Head Table. Circa 1910. Molded plaster pachyderm head used as one of the legs of the table used in Leon’s famous Fire and Water illusion. With a central hole for the metal support for the tabletop. Painted in red, green, tan, gold, and white. Height 23”. Evidence of wear, expert repair, and repainting. This attractive and artistically formed object is a relic from Leon’s original Fire and Water Illusion, an effect that helped him headline vaudeville stages for years. Vintage photos of show a sturdy table supported by four of these heads. The object was obtained from the legendary Davenport Magic Shop “crypt,” where portions of the Leon show were stored for decades after Davenports purchased the magician’s apparatus, some of which was later sold to Les Levante.
