Civil War Period Wooden “Battle Rattle”/Alarm Signal. Oft used aboard ship and, in some cases, in camp, to, in essence, sound “general quarters.” Constructed entirely of oak. Turning the handle activates a toothed gear that “clicks” against a flexible piece of wood creating a loud 'alarm'. Length 10 ½”. Old label affixed to body. Pictured in Francis Lord’s “Civil War Collector’s Encyclopedia” on page 202.
