[CIVIL WAR] The Soldier’s Prayer Book, owned by a soldier in the New York State Militia. Philadelphia: Protestant Episcopal Book Society, [1861]. 16mo. Publisher’s embossed cloth (few dark stains to covers, title slightly darkened and with small void to lower margin area). Provenance: original ownership signature and title to front endpaper from a Union soldier from “E Company, 71st Reg[iment]/N.Y.S.M.” The 71st Regiment of the New York State Militia left Navy Yard on July 16th, 1861, marching south for battle. On July 21st, the regiment passed through Centerville just before sunrise. Praised in the ‘Third Annual Report of the Bureau of Military Statistics of the State of New York (1866), as engaging “in some severe fighting and behaved with gallantry” at the battle of Bull Run.
