[EARLY AMERICAN ENGRAVINGS] Two Scrapbooks of 1840s-50s American Specimen Engravings. 4tos. Quarter leather scrapbooks with specimens of wood-engravings of American engraver George Wilcox Gregg and several contemporaries, compiled by Gregg’s brother William Henry, of St. Louis (his bookplates in both volumes). Includes advertising specimens (including final product labels), and engravings of Native Americans, nautical scenes, animals, tools, anatomy, occupations, fashion, hunting, dogs and pets, storefronts and residences, maps, and others; includes a number of original graphite drawings. Examples from other engravers including S.H. Gimber, H.S. Sadd, A. Dick, and many others. A wonderful, diverse array of images and subjects. Should be seen. A biography by Gregg’s brother in manuscript on the inside front cover of the smaller volume, dated 1894, states that George was born in Palmyra, New York on May 8, 1825 and died May 21, 1849. The printing business was in Rochester, and Gregg was also employed by S.G. Goodrich of Boston.
