Derby & Co., 1848. 8vo. FIRST EDITION. Illustrated with 8 engraved plates, foldout map (several old tape repairs, large horizontal tear to image area but with no losses). Rebound in modern cloth stamped in gilt (marginal browning or foxing throughout). Provenance: early pencil inscription to title “Presented to R.H. Leavitt at Cincinnati by Loomis of Oxford, Ohio”. A scarce title. Howes H-476. Many copies of this first edition were destroyed in a fire with no apparent copies of the second edition surviving.
