In 1735, La Condamine was sent to Peru by the Académie des Sciences to measure degrees of meridian at the Equator. This work documents his journey homeward from Peru to the Atlantic coast of South America via the Amazon River. The map of the Amazon in this volume is the first to have been drawn with latitudes observed.
