Contemporary calf ruled in gilt, expertly rebacked with early crimson morocco spine label titled in gilt laid down, raised bands, original endpapers. (Corners worn, offsetting to endpapers, armorial bookplate of Calwich Library, upper marginal dampstaining to signatures A-B8 and lightly affecting the upper margin near plate mark of map; else clean). Engraved folding plate at rear of “the riot which took place in the arena prepared for a bull-fight, Sieur Seniergues, Surgeon of the King, was killed” (Sabin). Sabin 38481, 38484. In 1735, La Condamine was sent to Peru by the Académie des Sciences to measure degrees of meridian at the Equator. This work documents his journey homeward from Peru to the Atlantic coast of South America via the Amazon River. The map of the Amazon in this volume is the first to have been drawn with latitudes observed.
