DELUXE FIRST EDITION, limited to 500 copies SIGNED BY SAM HOUSTON’S SON (author), this being number 246. Illustrated with numerous black & white plates (lacking maps in rear pocket). Publisher’s dark blue morocco titled in gilt, illustrated map front endpapers (gentle rubbing at ends and tips, mild marginal toning). Pencil inscription to ffep containing a bibliographical note in Howes’s distinctive handwriting. RARE. Howes H-689 (“a”). Provenance: Laid in with a typed letter signed from a Mr. John Logan of Nacogdoches to a Mr. Hugh W. Wright of Waxahachie, Texas thanking him for his recent purchase (dated August 5, 1987) of “Texas Independence” and explaining that this copy was purchased from the famed Americana bibliographer (author of U.S.IANA) and bookseller, Wright Howes, from his bookshop in Chicago, stating that he “left a few pencil lines intact, rather than erase them” as “they were put there by Wright Howes”.
