FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE depicting Texas as part of Mexico in three maps. Double column text printed within borders. Hand-colored engraved frontispiece (soiled and chipped at edges), engraved title (void to lower area near gutter partially affecting the cartouche), 76 engraved maps, diagrams, and plans with hand-coloring in outline. Rebacked in modern sheep over original marbled boards, original spine label in gilt laid down, renewed endpapers (boards rubbed, original subscription label affixed to verso of advertisement, foxing and offsetting throughout). A RARE AND IMPORTANT ATLAS. Phillips 770; Sabin 7260. First edition of “one of the first American general atlases to supplement the maps with lengthy geographical descriptions” (Ristow). Bradford concentrated largely on the Americas by including a general map of both North America and the United States, with several maps showing Texas as part of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas that referenced the Stephen F. Austin Colony. Subsequent issues include a separate map of Texas.
