BUKOWSKI, Charles (1920–1994). First Appearance of ‘The Days Run Away Like Wild Horses Over the Hills’ Original Typed Manuscript Submitted for the Hearse 10 Publication. Circa 1958/60. An early 4pp. typed manuscript poem (each 11 x 8 ½”), holographic corrections in red, blue and black inks in Bukowski’s hand; few light pencil erases, with Bukowski’s 1623 N. Mariposa Ave. address typed above title. PRESENTED TO BUKOWSKI’S FIRST PUBLISHER, on a single sheet with an INSCRIPTION AND ORIGINAL DRAWING by Bukowski to E.V. Griffith, editor at Hearse Press: “Hello E.V.–/Here’s some more./Hold,/Buk”. Included with the Hearse 10 (1969; printed pale blue wrappers) publication where this manuscript poem makes its first appearance. Contents loosely housed in a custom mustard cloth clamshell box titled and stamped with the drawing included by Bukowski, lower cover stamped “10 Hearse”; printing plates included (from Gibbs Bindery). Horizontal fold lines present, staple punctures at upper left corner. E.V. Griffith, editor of Hearse Press, published Bukowski’s first separately printed publication, a broadside, in June 1960, and later that year, his first chapbook. In 1969, Griffith published ‘Hearse 10’ which marked the very first appearance of Buk’s ‘The Days Run Away Like Wild Horse Over the Hills’ which was used to title his second book of poetry later that year for Black Sparrow Press.
