PALMER, Samuel (1805–1881). An English Version of the Eclogues of Virgil. London: Seeley & Company, 1883. Folio (311 x 212 mm). Second edition, following the limited large-paper edition of the same year. Half-title and title printed in red and black. The plates comprise an original etching by Palmer, 4 original etchings begun by Palmer and finished by his son, and 8 facsimiles of Palmer's drawings for etchings (occasional staining or spotting to margins of few plates). The states of some of the plates are as follows: Opening the fold (Lister 13 viii); Homeward Star (Lister 14 ii); Cypress Grove (Lister 15 II); Sepulchre (Lister 16 ii); Moeris and Galatea (Lister 17 ii). Original vellum with a central gilt device stamped to upper cover and framed in gilt, 3 raised bands, spine lettered gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut (few small tears with loss to vellum of lower cover). Eton prize inscription to John Waller Hills from his tutor. Provenance: From the private library of a local Chicago collector, part one.
