Large Portfolio of Late 19th Century Ironclad Battle Cruiser Albumen Photographs. 1896–1901. 38 original sepia-tone photographs on 33 cards, loose in a half morocco over cloth album titled “Marine” in gilt. Images feature numerous ship portraits (a few weapons testing and dockyard photos) of various countries including a German Kaiserin; Russian Pamiat Azova and The EMP Nicholas 1; French Carnot and the Pothuau; etc. The ships are seen in various ports or steaming through the sea; many are square-rigged but funnel-bearing (built 1870s-early 90s), most appearing French. Image area 11 x 15”, overall 15 x 18”. Cards unevenly toned, album spine perished; an historic collection of naval architecture.
