[WOMAN AVIATOR] GIPSON, Annette (1912–1985). A Woman Aviator’s Archive. Circa 1930s/40s. Annette Gipson was a woman competitive air racer in the 1930s and the founder of the annual “Annette Gipson All-Woman Air Race” which Amelia Earhart, Gipson’s close friend, served as starter. This collection includes Gipson’s leather aviator pilot cap completely covered in signatures of other aviators, her aviation goggles (missing one lens), her National Aeronautic Association annual sporting license (1933) with a shoulder bust photograph of her wearing the cap and goggles, two autograph books with many warm inscriptions of fellow pilots, several large original photographs of Gipson and her airplane including a full length sepia toned photograph of Gipson wearing the exact goggles and cap with signatures seen here, a photo of the aviator with the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, several magazine pages featuring the aviator, typed letters of correspondence by Gipson and others to various news and radio outlets including RKO introducing the pilot, pitch cards, her copy of Women in the Wind by Francis Walton with Gipson’s signed bookplate, John Wallis “Jack” Bishop unused souvenir flight tickets (friend and instructor to Gipson), two Florida Air Pilots Association buttons, and a large archive of correspondence between Mrs. Gipson and her lover, R. Wilson Way, including many postcards and letters. An historical collection of aviatrix memorabilia.
