Three-quarter length seated portrait of the magician in costume, the edge of his cape clutched in one hand. From a daguerreotype by P. Haas, “drawn on stone by F. Davignon.” A facsimile of the German magician’s signature below the portrait, and old penciled notations in the lower margins. 14 ½ x 11 1/8”. Very good. Rare.Herr Alexander’s reputation was sufficiently great as to secure him a mention in Herman Melville’s seminal work, Moby Dick.
