Chained Hands. Los Angeles, 1971. Designed by Robert Carl Cohen. 22 ¼ x 17”. Unmounted. Light creases in image. In 1972 Cohen published “Black Crusader,” an autobiography of Robert Franklin Williams, the first Black American to advocate in favor of armed self-defense. A passage in the autobiography references police chaining Williams’ hands during his trial for participating in a sit-in, as a form of intimidation to the greater Black community.
