Springfield Armory Model 1863 Artillery Rifle. Springfield, MA, ca. 1860s. Two-banded barrel. Original eagle engravings on side plate. Year of manufacture (1864) stamped on plate beside hammer. “VP” stamped on barrel. Ramrod. Barrel length 32”, overall length 49”. Pitting, signs of use. Not tested. Following the end of the Civil War, the Springfield Armory shifted its focus from supplying weapons to the battlefield to supplying them to the next generation of soldiers. The two-banded Springfield M1863 was assembled from surplus parts and was then sold for use in military schools across the United States.
