Includes: 52 issues in Volume V (lacks last leaf of Dec. 28); 52 issues in Volume VI; 51 (of 52) issues in Volume VII (lacking Jan. 3); 49 (of 53) issues in Volume VIII (lacking Jan. 30, March 12, March 19, June 25); 52 issues in Volume IX. Numerous wood engravings from drawings after Winslow Homer, Thomas Nast, etc., and after photographs by Mathew Brady, etc.; includes several full and double–page illustrations. Early half black leather, rebacked with new spines (corners rubbed, occasional tear with old repairs). An impressive run of almost a complete series of issues from the Civil War years that documented eyewitness accounts and was one of the most important publications that reported on the happenings of the war. Includes illustrated accounts of the Battle of Gettysburg, the Emancipation, and full coverage of the Lincoln assassination.
