JEFFERSON, Thomas (1743–1826). Notes on the State of Virginia. Boston: H. Sprague, 1802. 8vo. Engraved portrait frontispiece (mild browning near margins, slight offsetting from plate to title), folding map of Virginia, folding table of Native tribes (laid on Japanese paper, tiny void to outer margin slightly affecting text), woodcut maps of Madison’s Cave and the Logan affair in–text. Full modern calf with original red morocco lettering–piece gilt affixed to spine (terminal blank repaired with Japanese paper). Provenance: dated pencil inscription (1844). Ninth American edition. Howes J–78; Sabin 35904.Thomas Jefferson anonymously printed “Notes on the State of Virginia” in a limited edition of 200 copies while serving as United States Minister to France in 1785. A French edition appeared the following year, and the year after that the first publicly available English translation was printed by John Stockdale in London. Mathew Carey printed the first authorized American edition in 1794. Jefferson would revise and expand ‘Notes’ throughout his lifetime, adding “An Appendix Relative to the Murder of Logan’s Family” in 1800.
