Lithographic title with large vignette, hand–colored frontispiece of the heights of the principal mountains and lengths of the principal rivers, 76 hand–colored lithographed maps (3 double–page with each leave counted). (Mild browning or occasional pale dampstaining to outer margins, otherwise plates clean). Publisher’s half diced red calf over green marbled boards, red straight–grain morocco title label gilt on upper cover, pale yellow endpapers (extremities rubbed with some spots of marring or staining to upper cover). Provenance: Dr. Charles M. Hitchcock of San Francisco (contemporary signature; see Hitchcock Lectures at Berkley); Herbert Gray Hills (bookplate). EARLY DE SILVER EDITION OF AN IMPORTANT AND QUINTESSENTIAL ATLAS OF THE 19TH CENTURY. Despite being an atlas of the world, most of the atlas in concentrated on the United States including several important early maps of Texas, the American West and Midwest Territories.
