Full early tree–calf ruled in gilt, early rebacking with original backstrip laid down, raised bands, citrus and olive morocco lettering–pieces gilt, gilt scrollwork in compartments, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers. Provenance: Sir Francis Scott of Great Barr Hall (bookplate and inscription dated 1858). FIRST AMERICAN EDITION of Stephens extended narrative to his 1841 Incidents of Travel in Central America... describing all forty–four ruined cities visited during his travels with Catherwood.
