FIRST EDITION of this official narrative of the German South Polar Expedition whose ship Gauss became trapped in the ice for more than a year. This proved to be beneficial as Drygalski and his team of scientists were able to amass a wealth of scientific data which when completed compiled into 85 thick quartos becoming known as the “University of the Antarctic”.
