The Holy Bible Containing Ye Old and New Testaments… London: John Field, Printer to the Parliament, 1653. 2 works in 1 volume (Old Testament and New Testament), 24mo in twelves (114 x 57 mm). Engraved general title with historiated border, additional title for New Testament (Qq3r). Text double column with 62–lines and heading to a page. Early olive straight grain morocco, covers gilt framed in Greek key roll, compartments ruled in gilt and with gilt sunburst centerpieces, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers (light rubbing to corners). Contemporary inscription on front fly: “Lord where shall I go? Thou hast the Words of eternal Life”. –– [BOUND WITH:] The Whole Book of Psalms: Collected into English Meeter, by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins, and others. London: John Field, 1654. 24mo edition with the tenth line of text in title ending in “and” and catchword on A3r is “PSALM”. ESTC R498623; not in Wing. –– FIRST FIELD EDITION of this “very incorrectly printed” bible (Herbert). William Kilburne, in his pamphlet Dangerous errors in several late printed Bibles (1659) condemns this “Pearl Bible” (named for its small size “to carry in pockets”), and those “many Libertines and licentious people [that] did produce, and urge this Text from the authority of this corrupt Bible...”. One of the most erroneous errors is in Corinthians 6.9 which reads “the unrighteous shall [rather than “shall not”] inherit the Kingdom of God”.
