Period olive straight–grain morocco, gilt foliage and vine borders, raised bands gilt, gilt framing in compartments, gilt dentelle turn ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, concealing a FORE–EDGE PAINTING of a wooded scene of stags and cascading streams at Glen Tilt, Perthshire; custom cloth Solander box gilt. Provenance: Eton gift inscription on front fly written during Scott’s lifetime (“J. G. Smyth/from his friend/Broderick/on leaving Eton/March 18th 1831”); autograph card signed with a Princeton graduation sentiment dated 1944 affixed to front pastedown; John Michael Kauffman (bookplate).
