An uncommon and pioneering educational publication, created by two Chicago teachers as one of the first early education tools in which African American children could see themselves positively reflected. In 2020, the University of Chicago Arts Incubator commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of the flash cards with an exhibition, “S is for Soul Sister,” featuring current portraits of the children who originally appeared in the series.
