[U.S. CIVIL WAR]. O’SULLIVAN, Timothy H. (American, 1840–1882). –– GARDNER, Alexander, printer (Scottish American, 1821–1882). Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (Plate No. 35). Washington: Philip & Solomon, 1866. Albumen silver print (sheet 7 x 9”, overall 12 x 15”) on publisher’s mount (mount toned). The photo depicts the battlefield at Gettysburg in July 1863, with numerous army tents on the field and buildings of the town are visible in the background. Includes original accompanying textual leaf (some marginal chipping). From Gardner’s Incidents of the War series that is considered the first and greatest American photographic books ever published and thought to be the most important book to come out of the American Civil War. Much like Gardner, O’Sullivan left Mathew Brady’s daguerreotype studio on the issue of receiving proper credit for his work. The imprint on this photo shows O’Sullivan receiving credit from Gardner as photographer marking a new era for crediting intellectual property.
