[MILWAUKEE/WISCONSIN]. A massive archive of studio portrait glass plate negatives. Early 20th century. An estimated 12,000-15,000 glass plate negatives stored in over 40 contemporary wooden crates. Includes studio portraits of many different subjects such as infants, children, newlyweds, clubs, first communions, families, and men and women of various ages, often in formal dress, and including occasional series of portraits of the same subject. Sizes vary, the majority 7 x 5”, with some 8 x 10” and as large as 14 x 17”. Some stored in paper boxes. Some subjects identified by group or last name in ink at edge of plate. Also with a Photographer’s Association of Wisconsin ledger and six receipt pads. An incredible archive. Third party transportation required. Provenance: Joseph L. Mutzbauer (1884-1965). According to the Wisconsin Photographers Index, the Mutzbauer family of photographers, which included Joseph Mutzbauer (1856-1915), his son, Joseph L., and Louise Mutzbauer Acosta (1880-?), operated in Kewaunee and Milwaukee, both independently and with Star Studio (Milwaukee).
