[MONROE, Marilyn (1926-1962)]. -- CARTIER-BRESSON, Henri (French, 1908-2004). Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller on the set of The Misfits. 1960. Candid black and white photograph of Marilyn Monroe and then-husband Arthur Miller mid-conversation in their suite at the Mapes Hotel in Reno, Nevada. Monroe, caught off-guard by the photographer snapping a picture, glances in the camera’s direction. 8 x 10”. Stamped “Henri Cartier-Bresson / Magnum Photos / All Magazine Rights Reserved / Magnum Photos, Inc.” on verso. “Kill, 6346/22” written in pencil on verso. Creases to edges. John Huston’s 1961 film The Misfits would prove to be the last for Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable. Among the first photographers to arrive on set to document production were Henri Cartier-Bresson and Inge Morath, both of Magnum Photos, Inc. The photographers and cast enjoyed a light-hearted relationship despite the film’s troubled production, with much of the tension having to do with the deterioration of Marilyn Monroe’s marriage to playwright and Misfits screenwriter, Arthur Miller.
