Including: Engraved document, accomplished in manuscript, dated 11 October, 1907 and signed by New Jersey Governor Edward C. Stokes and Secretary of State Samuel Dickinson officially appointing James J. Bergen as an Associate Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court. 406 x 482 mm on vellum. Original embossed cream colored seal with official seal of New Jersey. -- Engraved document, accomplished in manuscript, dated 1 April, 1869 and signed by New Jersey Governor Theodore Randolph and Secretary of State Horace Congar appointing Bergen “commissioner for taking the acknowledgement and proof of deeds” for Plainfield County. 432 x 330 mm on paper. Light blue embossed seal with official seal of New Jersey present but detached. Notation on back of document confirming that oath of office was administered on 1 April, 1869. -- Engraved document, accomplished in manuscript, dated 1 April, 1882 and signed by Governor George C. Ludlow and Secretary of State Henry Kelsey appointing Bergen Prosecutor of the Pleas for Somerset County. 432 x 330 mm on paper. Light blue embossed seal with official seal of New Jersey. -- Handwritten document, accomplished in manuscript, dated 15 March, 1898, and signed by acting New Jersey governor Foster M. Voorhees and Secretary of State George Wurts appointing Bergen commissioner of fishing rights in the Delaware River and Bay. 432 x 330 mm on paper. Light blue embossed seal with official seal of New Jersey. -- Handwritten letter with unidentified signature ordering Bergen be appointed “Special Master” for the town of Somerset. 241 x 191 mm on paper. James J. Bergen began his political career in Somerset, New Jersey, shortly after the end of the Civil War. He served as Speaker of the New Jersey Assembly from 1891-1892 and as Associate Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court from 1907-1915.
