CHIDSEY, Charles Francis (1843-1933). The Browns Abroad. Circa 1871. Large 4to scrapbook compiled by industrialist and United States Congressman Charles Francis Chidsey of Pennsylvania. Scrapbook consists of letters sent by Chidsey from Europe to The Daily Free Press of Easton, PA, detailing his travels abroad with his family. Colorful postcards and hand-drawn embellishments. Pasted into the back of the scrapbook is a map from the RMS Oceanic with handwritten notations detailing the ship’s rescue of a foundering vessel off the coast of Nantucket on January 8, 1872. Charles Francis Chidsey served in the US Civil War as first lieutenant in the Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and later became president of the Lehigh and Eastern Railroad Company. He would later serve as mayor of Easton, Pennsylvania and as lieutenant governor of the state of Pennsylvania. The ship on which he sailed from Europe back to the United States, the RMS Oceanic, was the first ship built by the White Star Line - the company which would later build the ill-fated Titanic.
