[CHICAGO—JUVENILE DELINQUENCY]. Photograph album of John Worthy School. N.p., n.d. [Chicago, ca. 1900s/10s]. 50 matte-finish silver print photographs in an oblong black buckram album (6 ¾ x 11 ½”). Each photo approx. 4 ½ x 6 ½” (sight). Photographs titled in the negative. RARE VIEWS of the short-lived Chicago correctional school (in operation 1896-1916) for juveniles who had been convicted of crimes, and which was closed owing to its prison-like atmosphere. The photographs depict the school’s grounds, its buildings and residences, children in the prison-like “schoolyard,” a horse-drawn bus, dining room, the “manual training shop,” dormitory and cells, kitchen, laundry, and other interior spaces with workers and employees including several images of older inmates. (Some silvering at edges, but images generally sharp and clean.)
