[WWII]. A German soldier’s photograph album of 530 snapshots. Circa 1941–45. Oblong 4to (254 x 343 mm). Original black and white photographs (each approximately, 76 x 89 mm), hinge mounted. The album follows the 49th Mountain Corps (XXXXIX Gerbirgs–Armeekorps) through training in snowy mountainous country, to numerous candid photos of soldiers sleeping in cars and shaving in fields, later showing scenes of destruction as the soldiers invade Yugoslavia. Images depict burning buildings, destroyed airplanes and tanks, and enemy casualties on the battlefield. The Corps fought mainly on the Eastern Front later withdrawing to Bohemia where it surrendered to the Soviets in May 1945. The album fast forwards to the end of the war with numerous photos of the soldier’s portraits, families, vacations, and reunion banquets. All neatly housed in a post–war leather–backed album embossed with the years “1938–1945” and a mountain division cap on the upper cover.
