RUSSELL, Lillian (1861-1922). Signed cabinet card. New York: The Falk Studio, 1902. 267 x 191 mm. Cabinet card photograph of Russell as Lady Teazle in the comedy of manners The School for Scandal. Inscribed by Russell, “To Cora, from Lady Teazle/ Lillian Russell / January 27, 1905.” Date has been altered in another hand to “1925.” Clipped and torn edges. Lillian Russell was one of the most famous singers and actresses of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Around 1912 she became active in the women’s suffrage movement, even going so far as to refuse to pay income taxes in protest of women being denied the vote. Upon her death in 1922 she was given a military funeral in recognition for her recruiting efforts during World War I.
