[BURLESQUE]. Scrapbook of Gayety Theatre clippings and ephemera. Minneapolis: ca. 1910s. Folio. A large collection of newspaper clippings and playbills from the heyday of the famed theater advertising vaudeville performers, wrestlers, and more. Binding loose. Overall condition, fair. The Gayety Theatre opened in 1909, and for the first few years of its existence operated as a legitimate theatre house. Within a few years, however, the theatre shifted its focus to burlesque and vaudeville acts, with Al Jolson, Sophie Tucker, and Carrie Finnell gracing its stage at various points. Its reputation for bawdy performances caused the city of Minneapolis to shut it down in 1928, and it was only after the city extracted a promise from its owner to clean up its act that it was allowed to reopen. The Gayety closed its doors for good in 1945, and was demolished in 1980.
