Original three-quarter white vellum with gray cloth boards, decorated with gilt lettering and crest, top edge gilt. LIMITED EDITION, number 330 of 525 copies. Stanhope’s letters consist of instructive correspondence on the subjects of mathematics, geography, politics, diplomacy, and philosophy. George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon is best remembered today as the financial backer of numerous archaeological expeditions in Egypt, the most famous of which being the discovery of King Tutahnkhamun’s tomb in 1922. He passed away four months later of an infected mosquito bite, purportedly the first victim of the infamous Curse of King Tut.
