MARTINEAU, Harriet (1802-1876). Unsigned third person handwritten note. One page, 8vo. 203 x 127 mm. Mounted on paper of same size. Horizontal fold at center. Martineau writes, “Miss Martineau will be happy to see Mr. Colburn at 12 o, clock. / Thurs 7 morn 7.” Considered to be the first female sociologist, Harriet Martineau began publishing in earnest at the age of 27 after her family’s textile business closed. Her ensuing fame allowed her to move to London in 1832, where she made the acquaintance of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, John Stuart Mill, Sydney Smith, George Eliot, and Charles Dickens. In addition to her sociological works she wrote numerous novels and religious texts, and her contributions to British society were such that she was invited by Princess Victoria to her 1838 coronation.
