MORE, Hannah (1745-1833). Unsigned third person handwritten letter to “A. Strahan.” One page, 4to, with address, stamp, and seal on one side, 152 x 152 mm. Partial loss of seal, accompanying loss to text on verso. Mounted on larger paper, 254 x 165 mm. MORE WRITES IN THIRD PERSON TO KING’S PRINTER ANDREW STRAHAN. Accompanied by engraving of Hannah More, possibly removed from a book. A noted philanthropist, playwright, and author, Hannah More is today best known for her Cheap Repository Tracts, written in response to Thomas Paine’s The Age of Reason. Throughout the 1780s she associated with such notable British authors as Joshua Reynolds, Elizabeth Carter, Samuel Johnson, Elizabeth Montagu, and Edmund Burke, and slowly developed a strong abolitionist viewpoint regarding the question of slavery; an issue which she would spend the rest of her life railing aaginst.
