NORTON, Caroline (1808-1877). Autograph letter signed fragment by Caroline Norton. Unknown date, location. 102 x 229 mm. Old folds. Mounted on larger sheet, 267 x 127 mm. Some bleed-through of glue at five points. Typewritten note on index card affixed to verso of larger sheet. Caroline Norton was an English writer and social reformer. In 1827 she married George Chapple Norton, a union which would prove fateful not only for Norton but for English history. A jealous and abusive husband, George Chapple Norton became increasingly irate as his wife’s career as an author soared while his own professional fortunes soured. The tensions became such that in 1836 Caroline left her husband, living off of her own earnings as a writer. She became a passionate social reformer, and her campaigning efforts led to the passage of the 1839 Custody of Infants Act, the Matrimonial Causes Act of 1857, and the Married Women's Property Act of 1870.
