Great Ideas of Western Man. Container Corporation of America, 1950s/60s. Four portfolios of lithographic advertisements commissioned by the Container Corporation of America for use in publications such as Time and Fortune for years 1950-56, 1960-63. Each lithograph, 14 x 11”. Three lithographs missing from 1950-53 portfolio, two missing from 1954-56. The Great Ideas of Western man series was the brainchild of Container Corporation of America founder Walter Paepcke and his wife Elizabeth, who were also prominent art collectors. The most prominent artists and illustrators of the day were commissioned to create the pieces, among them Herbert Bayer, Richard Lindner, Rene Magritte, Esther Louise Peck, Ben Shahn, and Elaine Urbain. Today complete collections of these illustrations are held in numerous institutions all around the world.
