ROSS, Faucett. Archive of Letters from Faucett Ross to Jay and Frances Marshall. File folder filled with TLSs and ALSs (the latter in Ross’s trademark script, in blue ink) written by the St. Joseph, Missouri-based magician Faucett Ross. Over 45 letters covering a wide range of topics, including Marshall’s editorship of The Phoenix, various tricks and suggestions for books to publish (one explaining Dr. Tarbell’s working act, another proposed by Dai Vernon which would explain the Second Deal in detail), tricks devised by Ross, information about other performers (he teases at enclosing an outline of T. Nelson Downs’ complete “big show,” but it is no longer present), Vernon’s tour of England, comical sketches by Ross, and more. Most letters fill one or two pages, with the longest an eight-page missive; dates span the late 1950s and early 1960s. Primarily written on unlined 4to sheets. Also included are several letters written to Ross and passed on to the Marshall’s by other correspondence, including Robert Lund. A fascinating collection filled with historical detail unavailable elsewhere, from a well-posted magic “insider.”
